SYSTRA have a long and valued relationship with India. Our first contract dates back to 1957 when SOFRERAIL (SYSTRA’s ancestor) was selected to provide technology to electrify Indian Railways. The 25kV traction system introduced by SYSTRA has since become the backbone of Indian Railways. During the 1980s SYSTRA provided assistance for India’s first metro project – the Kolkata Metro. This was followed by preliminary studies for future metros in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, where SYSTRA was involved.
After Kolkata (1st line opened in 1984) and currently Delhi (190 km of metro line built between 1995 and 2010), the Metro market have a strong expansion in India, making it one the world’s three major markets with China and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
